Vocabulary Week #2

Serenity:

  • "You're pinned down in some filthy hellhole of a paddy, getting your ass delivered to kingdom come, but then for a few seconds everything goes quiet and you look up and see the sun and a few puffy white clouds, and the immense serenity flashes against your eyeballs - the whole world gets rearranged - and even though you're pinned down by war you never felt more at peace."
  • The context clue i used was example, its an example because it explains  the scene and how calm and at peace you feel and serenity is have a peaceful state of mind.
  • Going to the beach gives her serenity and lets her think about things.

  • "Some carried themselves with a sort of wistful resignation, others with pride or stiff soldierly discipline or good humor or macho zeal."
  • The context clue i used was an antonym because pride and soldierly are all the opposite of wistful and they explain how the men carried themselves due to how they were feeling.
  • The girl was wistful when i came to the boy and what he wanted.

  • "They sneered at sick call."
  • The context clue i used was my logic. I used my logic because i was somewhat familiar with the word and knew what it meant when they used it.
  • He sneered at his mom for not letting his friends come over.

Reflection

Applying Past Knowledge To New Situations:

What i learned about this habit of mind is that when you as a person go through things in life whether its good or bad you learn from that experience and you gain knowledge from it because it was something new you went through. And with that knowledge gained you then know to apply it to other similar situations that may come up later on in your life and you'll know how to handle them a lot better because you have that gained knowledge and you now know how to apply it. Applying past knowledge to new situations is a habit of mind i practice often, an example of how i practiced it, was one day at work i had to deal with a bad customer who was really rude and i didn't really know what to do because i haven't came across a customer like that. But then i got through it and worked with the customer to where we both came to an agreement and that was that, but then weeks later another rude customer came in and was acting the same but this time i knew how to deal with it because i already had that experience with the other customer. It has benefited me because with applying what i know to other similar situations i know how to deal with things better and i gain more knowledge.

Persisting:

What i learned about this habit of mind is that if you really want something and want to get something done you're going to do whatever i takes, no matter how many tries it takes to get it right. Persisting is key to success, and no matter how many times you fail at something if you really want it done right or if you just really want it you'll do what it takes to get it right. Persisting is a habit of mind i have used when it comes to certain things. One example is when i was in school we had a test one day and i was nervous because i hadn't studied foe it. when the test was in front of me i did the ones i knew and went back to ones i didn't know so well. I just stared at them because i didn't know what to do, but i knew i ha to try them even if they were wrong. When I got my test back i got some wrong and the teacher let me retake the test. I studied for it and did what it took to pass the test this time. i went and took it and this time i did much better because i prepared and did what it took to get a better score on the test. It has benefited me because i have learned not to give up on things so easily and to do what it takes to get things done the right way or the way i want them done.

Striving For Accuracy:

What I learned about this habit of mind is that to strive for accuracy you first need to know what you're striving for and how you're going to get it done. Having a set goal makes it easier to reach your goal and having high standards for things will also help with accuracy and striving for it. Striving for things that you want it good, but it also isn't good to do it all the time. You only want to do it with certain things in life, mostly with things that are big goals and goals that you really want. Always trying your best on things helps, but there are certain things that you need to set goals for and strive a little harder to achieve. Striving for accuracy is something that i have done when it comes to certain things in life. One example is in school, school is a place where i do have set goals for certain things and know how I'm going to do it. I always try my best and know i have a certain potential i can achieve if i strive for it. It has benefited my life because i know i can reach accuracy when it comes to certain things i just really need to strive for it and do my best on it. Striving for accuracy will really help in throughout my life because somethings need to have a certain potential put into them and i know i can achieve it.

The Things I Carry

The things I carry in my backpack are both tangible and intangible things. The tangible things that I carry in my bag are school supplies, books, my wallet, gum, my glasses, and headphones. I carry school supplies because I need them while I'm in class so I wont have to keep asking for school supplies. Also because they're needed for everything at school and I don’t really have a choice. I carry books because some of my classes require books so I know what is being taught in the class that day. Books I think are important in school when they are needed. I carry my wallet because I have my ID in there and I also have money. And since I'm at school almost all day I buy food or snacks when I have time in between classes. I carry gum because when I eat or anything my breath wont smell after and I wont feel like when I talk to people they think my breath smells. I carry my glasses because I cant see without them when I'm in my classes. And so when I'm taking notes and sitting in class I can see what I'm writing and whats going on in the class. And I carry headphones because I have a lot of time to kill in between classes so I just got sit somewhere and listen to music and I also feel like I'm in my own little world when I'm just listening to music. Music makes me feel calm when I'm stressed or anything, so I feel like headphones are much needed to be carried. Some of the intangible things that I carry in my bag are stress, pressure, support, and happiness. I carry stress because school and work cause me stress and that’s not something that can be gotten rid of fast so that’s carried. I carry pressure because I want to make my mom and my brother proud and get through everything and sometimes I feel like I wont be able to do it. I carry support because through everything I get support from my family and everyone who wants me to succeed and do good. I also carry happiness because through everything I am happy and I know that one way or the other things are going to be fine and pan out how they were meant to be.

Vocabulary

Profound:

  • "The guys dead, he kept saying, which seemed profound the guys dead." Pg. 12
  • For context clues i used mt logic because the sentence is describing how dead the man is.
  • watching a good crime show can be very profound if they put in a good amount of evidence or the viewer to find and solve.

  • "For the most part, they carried themselves with a poise, a kind of dignity." Pg. 18
  • Fort the context clues clues i used example because the sentence says, "they carried themselves with a poise. a kind of dignity." Dignity is similar to poise in the way they used it in the sentence which makes it an example.
  • He carries himself with poise and confidence

Entrench :

  • "He tried not to cry. with his entrenching tool, which weighed 5 pounds, he began digging a hole in the earth."
  • The context clue i found was an example because it states that "he began digging a hole in the earth."
  • The politician was entrenched in his political ideals.
